P.D. Ceanneir is a very welcome addition to the fantasy genre. This debut novel offers great scope for an epic to unfold over, hopefully, a number of novels. The book has all the necessary ingredients to keep you hooked with treachery, atrocity, elemental powers and brilliant fight scenes being among many.

I don't intend to give away much of the plot, but one aspect I particularly liked was the detail within the fight scenes, whether they be one-on-one spectaculars or the strategical army-vs-army confrontations. It will also be interesting to see how the characters evolve and develop, especially the main protagonist who has much potential to offer.

Personally, I can't wait for the second novel and the twist at the end was a great touch, it certainly has me hooked. A brilliant new saga that would look great on the big screen, buy the book and you'll see why.

Epic battles, evil tyrants, intrigue, romance, humour and dark tragedy, the first book of the Rawn Chronicles has all of these in abundance. And it whisks you through the colourful landscape of its world at a fast pace. A truly remarkable read and I will definitely look out for the second book.

The Rawn Chronicles follows much of the troupes of its genre in as much as plot and prose pushes the story along and has a slightly Celtic feel to it. Ceanneir has taken moments in Scottish history and woven it into the tale so subtly that it will take a keen eye, and knowledge of the past, to spot it.
The story unfolds in the island continent of Tattoium-Tarridun, a singe landmass split into two by the most dominant kingdoms, the Roguns, who inhabit the west, and the Vallkytes in the east. Both kingdoms share the same bloodline and their kings are even brothers, but an uprising in the southern Wildlands by the Nithi causes both kingdoms to unite and march to war. It's at this point that the story turns to dark deception and tragedy. King Kasan of the Vallkytes is in league with the Nithi and destroys his brothers Rogun army in battle to scatter his people into exile and conquers their capital city.
In amongst the Roguns plight, we follow the life of Havoc De Proteous Cromme, Crown Prince of the Roguns, who is training to be come a Rawn master, the Rawn Arts is a form of magic that makes the user able to control natural phenomenon through the four elements of earth, water, wind and fire. However, Havoc has a curse, or an illness, that fester inside him when he has negative emotions. This caused uncontrollable expulsions of superheat which can cause untold devastation. So he leaves his people and lives a life of solitude in the mountains.
He has a series of adventures as he tries to come to terms with his curse and find a way to control it. Eventually he meets Powyss of the Hoath who takes him to the Vale where dwarves live. There he aids the Master Smith Gunach in making a new sword for him and uses his curse, as well as his ability to control earth elements, to fashion the sword. What he creates is a sword of power, known as the Sword that Rules, or the Blacksword of Prophecy. With it he can become indestructible.
Eventually he and the sword become synonymous as people name him the Blacksword. The sword gives him confidence in his abilities and he is able to aid Powyss as they free slaves from the mines of Haplann, but they are hounded by the Vallkytes and a powerful female Ri (a Rawn that has the ability to use all four elements together) called Jynn.
Where this book scores is in the camaraderie of its characters, its manipulative villains, and the impressive descriptions of the choreographed fight scenes. The high octane fight at the end between the Blacksword and Jynn is memorable. You also get the feeling that Havoc's Blacksword persona is turning into a separate identity and it will be something to watch out for in the second book.

An excellent addition to the Fantasy genre.

Couldn't put it down, and read it through in two sittings, I read fast when I get a good book. :-)

The interplay between the characters, and the vivid imagery is wonderful. I have read some medieval era sword and sorcery fantasy that has been forgettable, this however is not!

I look forward to future releases from P D Ceanneir, I hope it is not a long wait. :-) :-X

first time Novel Peter delivers an epic brilliant story, being a huge avid
reader of all fantasy novels I know the difference between what is defined as a
mediocre read to an epic read. I fully recommend any huge fantasy book fan
like myself to share in this wonderful masterpiece, this book will not
disappoint the reader and for those choosing not to purchase this then you're
missing out on something special here. Iv'e a huge library of fantasy books
ranging from Tolkien, Robert E. Howard to Piers Anthony and one would like to
state this.There's a new kid in town guys, his name is P. D. Ceanneir.
